About us
‘The Vault’ is Carlow’s first youth café set up by Carlow VEC and Carlow Regional Youth Services for the young people of the Carlow area. ‘The Vault’ is situated in the heart of Carlow Town and is commonly known as ‘the old credit union’. The Youth Café is wheelchair accessible and its services are open to all members of the community.
The main café area consists of a large recreational seating area which is designed for young people to watch DVD’s, music video’s, sports channels etc. There is also a coffee dock area for people to have a selection of snacks on request. Internet access will be provided which may be needed for research, homework etc. The Internet access point will be closely supervised and monitored by staff. There will also be various seating area’s throughout the café for young people to have a chat with friends over a cup of tea at their own desecration.
In The Vault there will be the ‘music-producing’ room situated off the café which will be in what was formerly ‘the vault’ of the old credit union. This room is sound-proof and will be used solely for producing music and for band practice.
There is a kitchen area off the café which will provide facilities for cooking, baking and will act as a wet-area for arts and crafts. Off the kitchen there is access to an outdoor recreational area which will provide an enclosed and safe environment for soccer blitzes, basketball tournaments etc.
The café offers a fun, safe and relaxing place for young people to hang out with friends, have a chat with the staff, and take part in various activities. The café will be run by a team of Youth Workers, trained staff and volunteers.
Activities
‘The Vault’ will strive to provide a wide range of fun activities managed and run by a team of youth workers which are in response to the needs and interests of the young people in Carlow.
Such activities will include;
Educational Information
Youth Workers at The Vault will aim to provide young people with support, advice and information surrounding issues on their day-to-day lives and will work to provide young people with such advice and information when needed.
However, the staff at CYRS understand that there are some issues that are difficult to discuss openly with others. In response to this, information concerning ‘teen issues’ will be displayed on the walls of the café on a monthly basis. Such topics will include information on school life, money management, relationships, health/feel-good, the law, racism etc.
Menu / Food Dock
The new Youth Cafe will offer a free and healthy selection of snacks and drinks such as ‘cheese toasties’, fruit, soup, tea and coffee.
Other Services Available
‘The Vault’ will also provide a wide range of services to meet the various needs of the young people in the Carlow Region.
Such services include;
- Access to County Carlow Drugs Initiative (CCDI)
- Access to Foláine, Carlow's free and confidential counselling service for young people
- opportunities for young people to participate in summer camps, Civic Link Exchanges, International Exchanges and "Time - Out Weekends"
- An opportunity to seek advice and support for the Youth Workers
Overall, The Vault is a much needed service that Carlow has been waiting for and we look forward to a new and exciting year to come at Carlow’s first Youth Café , ‘The Vault’.
