The YARC project has been running in Carlow Youth Services since 1999.

The project aims to establish relationships with young people in Carlow that may be unattached, or on the fringes of normal home life, school or youth activities in Carlow.

The young people are supported and encouraged to return to some mainstream activities, by devising programmes to meet their needs, or help them access existing services.

The project includes:

Personal Development Weekends

boys playing hurling on a weekend awayThese are time out weekends for young people aged between 13 and 17yrs.

They give the young people an opportunity to have “Time Away” from their normal environment.

The weekend is a fun, activity-based programme looking at areas such as team building, self – esteem, negotiation skills, goal setting and creativity. The aim is that the young people explore all these through challenging activities and adventure sports.

One to One Support:

Included in the YARC project is one to one support for young people. These sessions are for young people whom for whatever reasons at a certain time in their lives might need some extra support and some one to talk to in a safe non-judgmental environment.

International Exchange Work

The YARC project is also involved in International Exchanges, and in the past year has been involved in a Causeway exchange in Wales, and a SONFE exchange in Italy cultural exchangeand Ireland.

These exchanges like all residential work are very positive experiences for all involved and are a good stepping-stone in strengthening relationships with the young people involved and providing them with an opportunity to meet and bond with young people from other countries and cultures.

“The Hub”

Our recently renovated activity space, now called “The Hub” is home to our Drop-in club. Young people can feel free to drop in and join in activities or just relax. They can also join in the specialist activities available, furniture making, motorbike repairs, art, and music club. Monday evenings is Cinema Evening where you can enjoy a DVD in the company of your friends.

“The Hub” is open 5 nights per week.

This project has 65 (42 boys and 23 girls) young people who have been involved in different elements of the programme.

Teenage Summer Camp

This camp catered for 35 young people with a weeks programme at the end of July. The activities available were trips to places of interest and imputs on self defense, drugs and healthy eating. The highlight was an overnight trip to Oakwood Theme Park in Wales. The Young People from camp continued to engage with the project activities after camp. They took part in the “Copping-on Programme” and had sessions of Tai-bo (self defense) and Time out weekends.
